Can Virtual Reality and Extended Reality help us to be not only more creative but allow us to touch the reality of our environment more intimately?

Here are some provocative and inspiring thoughts and moving images from Miami last week:

When filmmaker and self-described sci-fi geek Diliana Alexander discovered that VR could increase audiences’ empathy levels, she and her co-founder were inspired to create a festival that explored where this technology would take the creative world. Thus, FilmGate Interactive was born.

This year’s theme: Solar Punk

Solar Punk is a literary and artistic movement that envisions and works toward actualizing a sustainable future interconnected with nature and community. This year’s FilmGate Extended Reality Festival will showcase a variety of Solar Punk-inspired projects, including “Plastisapiens” and “Spring Odyssey.”

According to Alexander,  “[The solar punk theme] is a cautiously optimistic way to move forward, hopefully without green washing, knowing that our environment and humans are irreversibly changed by technology and industry.”
