We have the technology we need

The point the SolarPunk movement keeps pressing is that we don’t need to wait for technological salvation around the corner: we already have the technology we need to solve most of our problems.

And this is what the commentators are saying:

One myth argues that there’s nothing we can do to stop climate change – that we can’t cut our emissions without crippling the economy. This myth presents a false dichotomy – arguing that we must choose between a healthy economy and a healthy environment. This is a false choice. Before the Flood – Fact: We Absolutely Can Solve the Climate Crisis Today

The reason for the current absence of climate action—that is, our world leaders’ stupefying, infuriating, and utterly senseless fossil fuel suicide pact—has very little to do with a need for further technological innovation. Rather, according to the most recent IPCC climate change report published this week, the blame falls more on a consistent lack of political will, financial institutions’ failure to disinvest from fossil fuels, and the enduring power of the entrenched interests dedicated to pulling every last barrel of oil and bucket of coal from the Earth. We Have Enough Climate Tech. What We Need is Political Will | Time

The last in a series of major United Nations climate reports arrived with a thud. But if the previous two reports chronicled all the ways in which the climate crisis is an existential danger, the new report is a call to action. Call it the get-shit-done report. The most important top-line message from it to the world: We have the technology we need to create a habitable future available to us right now. It’s largely money and politics standing in the way of getting to that better place. IPCC: Renewable technology can stop climate change right now – Protocol

Technology is where most energy transition conversations remain focused. And yet, technological innovation is not what’s standing in the way of significant and necessary near-term climate progress. We already have so many of the foundational technological building blocks of the clean energy transition at hand: renewables, energy efficiency, energy storage, and pathways to electrifying a vast array of energy end uses. Combined, these technologies have the capacity to get us an overwhelming amount of the way there. Do We Really Need New Technology to Fight Climate Change? – Union of Concerned Scientists
