AI is very much in the news

Here’s an excerpt from a recent piece looking at the overall issues:

By optimizing resource use and helping predict and respond to environmental challenges, AI could help create a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

And here’s a excerpt from a piece from an engineer’s perspective from late last year:

Focusing on human-centric design principles could help fulfil visions of a future in which machines work hand-in-hand with humans to improve everyone’s quality of life.

‘Solarpunk’ is an art movement depicting a sustainable future where technology meets nature, the world is at peace and humans collaborate with robots to build a better quality of life. All of these ideals sound very Utopian, but with the fast-paced advancement of technology – and society’s urge to become greener – the future could easily resemble solarpunk if the correct steps are taken...

Design students are already working on it:

AI system called DALL-E can design images based on written prompts

University of Waterloo students Myah Sachedina (top) and Khalil Heron used artificial intelligence to help create an image of a more sustainable life on campus.

“I wanted it to be in a solarpunk style — which is almost a cyberpunk-esque style, but with a big focus on sustainability. I wanted to create a perfect utopia world where everything is sustainable,” he said. “I think it’s really powerful how the program can create not only just real images, but it can also create art.”
