Solarpunk India

It’s everywhere.

We’ve seen Solarpunk in Arizona and Koltata.

And there is indeed a lot of Solarpunk inspiration from the Subcontinent.

A couple of years ago, the Telegraph India looked at a brilliant subculture, its solutions and visions – itself providing providing a brilliant overview of the movement. The last words in the piece look at what’s happening in India:

Sayantani Sengupta, a solarpunk researcher and DIY enthusiast, teaching at NSHM Calcutta says, “I try to take small steps in my everyday life that align with the solarpunk vision. A few months back, I came across a video on ‘seed bombs’ and ‘guerrilla gardening’ and got inspired to make seed bombs with my friends and drop them in the abandoned areas nearby.”

A new Sci-Fi anthology brims with hope as it explores our kinship with other beings – and includes works by Indian authors. A review by Sayantani reiterates why we need writing like this:

This is a necessary collection for a time in the planet’s history when shifts in collective imagination are the need of the hour. In these times of climate doom, growing inequity and injustice, books like Solarpunk Creatures help us think and imagine differently, beyond our insular selves, together and in community with others, human and non-human, visible, invisible or fathomless.

Finally, the Indian Express last week considered what to know about Solarpunk, the literary movement that seeks a sustainable way forward:

Solarpunk has emerged in some circles as a viable counterpart to the dystopian world of cyberpunk, presenting the idea that a peaceful, harmonious society may well be within reach.

Good ideas for this part of the world too!
