solarpunk… cyberpunk… steampunk

There are all sorts of ‘punk genres’ out there – including our very own solarpunk:

Solarpunk arose out of a Tumblr thread in 2014. It is much like Ecopunk, but with a more radically different image of the future in many ways. It combines environmentally friendly messages with art nouveau and African inspired architecture, creating a neo-classical, whimsical future. But I don’t want to downplay the fact that solarpunk retains the radical, punk roots of the genre, by insisting on radical societal change. Solarpunk has taken off, and is now contributing to environmental political movements vision of the future.

It started with cyberpunk:

Since the advent of the cyberpunk genre, a number of cyberpunk derivatives have become recognized in their own right as distinct subgenres in speculative fiction, especially in science fiction.[1] Rather than necessarily sharing the digitally and mechanically focused setting of cyberpunk, these derivatives can display other futuristic, or even retrofuturistic, qualities that are drawn from or analogous to cyberpunk: a world built on one particular technology that is extrapolated to a highly sophisticated level (this may even be a fantastical or anachronistic technology, akin to retrofuturism), a gritty transreal urban style, or a particular approach to social themes.

Steampunk, one of the most well-known of these subgenres, has been defined as a “kind of technological fantasy;”[1] others in this category sometimes also incorporate aspects of science fantasy and historical fantasy.[2] Scholars have written of the stylistic place of these subgenres in postmodern literature[3]

And here we are in Devon with steampunk:

Lynton Lynmouth Cliff Railway Day & Victorian Steampunk Festival

As Devon Live reports:

Get ready to gear up and steam ahead as The Lynton & Lynmouth Steampunk Gathering is chugging back into town. Saturday, May 11, marks the seventh year of the event, which coincides with National Cliff Railway Day and is hosted annually by Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway. The previous event saw over 200 people parading about the towns of Lynton and Lynmouth dressed as Steampunk time travellers, pastime pirates and visiting Victorians.

But the ‘capital’ of this genre is a little further north:
